Tone N Twerk

On Saturday 6 December 2014, I had the pleasure of being invited down to the Tone N Twerk class hosted at GYMBOX-Old Street.

What is Twerking you ask? Well, according to the Oxford Dictionary, and yes the word ‘twerk’ has made it to the Oxford dictionary, twerking is “A dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance”.

Although a lot of people associate the word with Miley Cyrus, as a dance craze that she created, unfortunately she is not the founder. There are many claims that twerking first originated in American strip clubs and it is heavily associated with the New Orleans bounce scene in the early 90’s. However, from a more historical context, twerking can be said to have originated from West Africa. Twerking combines a rotation of hips and bouncing of the bum, which is similar to that of ‘Mapouka’ a dance from Côte d’Ivoire. Basically, twerking isn’t a new trend. However, it has become a lot more mainstream.

Anyway, thats enough history for one day, let me tell me more about the class…

We were introduced to our instructor Brooklyn, who gave us a quick explanation as to what we should expect. Not only was she very helpful she was also very informative and discussed a few tweak myths, such as only those with huge glutes like Nickie Minaj can twerk. She taught us the basic moves required to twerk and explained the concept behind each move.

Imagine a legs bums and tums class without having to do any boring squats, sit-ups or lunges. It was 45 minutes worth of dance moves which focused on your core, glutes and quads. We were taught several dance routines to the latest club bangers in the hip-hop scene. The majority of the dance moves are performed in a squat position, so you can imagine the burning sensation you experience for the best part of the class.

I was not expecting it to be such an active class. My heart rate was up for the entire session and I was sweating like I had been on the treadmill for 30 minutes. The best part for me was that I had finally found a new replacement for cardio. I have been looking for something different which isn’t too repetitive and boring and tone n twerk was definitely the opposite. Not only is the class fun, but it teaches you a different kind of confidence and allows you to bring out your inner sexy.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone trying to get active and have fun and be sexy whilst doing it.
