We’ve all seen the photos online, an oozing egg on top of thick slices of wholemeal bread or crushed avocado with #eggporn written underneath. But there is more to this hashtag than just a creamy yolk. In fact eggs have lots of hidden benefits.
They’re high in quality protein which is important for building muscle, cartilage and helping your skin. They also have vitamin B2, a major source of energy production and low amounts of fat and cholesterol, which is why it works well with higher healthy fats such as avocados.
These little shelled gems are also rich sources of vitamin D, B6, B12 and selenium as well as minerals such as zinc, iron and copper.
But just how can you ensure you eat your eggs in a healthy way? For starters, ditch the add ons and stick with just eggs and water. You don’t need salt, vinegar or oil to cook a delicious egg. Poaching or boiling is a great way to eat an egg in a good way.
Poaching eggs is renowned for being difficult, but it you want that perfect #eggporn image then you’re going to want to learn how to perfect it. There are three options for this.
- Buy an egg poacher, they’re pretty cheap and readily available
- Use a sandwich bag, place the bag in a glass and crack in the egg, then twist to seal and place in boiling water for 4 minutes. After carefully remove and pour the egg out.
- Boil water and stir to make a whirlpool, crack the egg into a glass and slowly pour into water, leave for 4 minutes then remove with a slotted spoon.
The other option is of course to just boil the egg. This is super easy and you can just pop the egg with shell in tact in boiling water and leave for 5-14 minutes, depending on how well done you like your yolk. Then either chop the top off and dip bread in or peel shell off and enjoy.
